Mark Carney will stand up to President Trump and build Canada strong

Montreal, QC – At this time of crisis, as President Trump threatens our sovereignty, Canada needs a Prime Minister who can stand up to the President and build a strong economy.

Tonight, in Montreal, Mark Carney once again demonstrated why he is ready to meet this moment. He outlined his plan to build Canada strong by fighting President Trump’s unjust tariffs, protecting Canadian workers and industry, and building the fastest growing economy in the G7.

“I’ve managed crises my entire career: I led the Bank of Canada through the 2008 financial crisis, and the Bank of English through Brexit,” said Mark Carney, Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. “I’ve been here before – and I have a plan to see Canada through this.”

Over the course of the debate, Mr. Carney demonstrated his deep understanding of economic issues and ability to calmly manage crises. He outlined his plan to make life more affordable for Canadians with a tax cut for the middle class and the most ambitious housing plan since the Second World War. He highlighted how his government will make Canada the world’s leading energy superpower while reducing emissions, including by fast-tracking nation building projects while upholding Indigenous rights and environmental protections. He emphasized that a Mark Carney-led government will protect Canadians by working to stop illegal guns and drugs from flowing over the U.S. border, fighting crime, and building safer communities. And he reiterated measures he’s already taken, as well as further actions he’s committed to take, in order to protect Canadian workers and secure Canadian sovereignty – including with a new Strategic Response Fund to boost our auto sector’s competitiveness.

“In a crisis, you need to respond with overwhelming force – you need to think big,” added Mr. Carney. “We can give ourselves more than President Trump could ever take away.”

Canadians need real leadership in this time of crisis, but Pierre Poilievre won’t show it. He’s been following President Trump’s playbook for years, repeating empty slogans, and is pushing divisive cuts to the services Canadian families rely on. In the most consequential election of our lifetime, Pierre Poilievre is the wrong choice at the wrong time.

A Mark Carney-led government will stand strong against President Trump’s tariffs, create new jobs, cut taxes for the middle class, and build the fastest growing economy in the G7. Liberals will build Canada strong.
