Ottawa, ON – After nine years, the NDP-Liberal government has created a crime wave in Canada. Violent crime has skyrocketed by 50 percent since Justin Trudeau became Prime Minister while violent gun crime has increased by 116 percent. In 2023, 34 percent of all homicides were committed by a criminal who was out on bail or another form of release.
Today, Statistics Canada again confirmed that Trudeau’s dangerous catch-and-release policies have made our communities unsafe. This report showed that homicides had increased by 27 percent since Trudeau became prime minister.
In the past four years, Statistics Canada has reported the highest number of homicides since they started recording data in 1961. The 778 homicides recorded in 2023 makes that year the third worst year for homicides on record. In total, Canada’s homicide rate per 100 thousand has increased from 1.71 in 2015 to 1.94 today.
This crime wave is a direct consequence of NDP-Liberal legislation like Bill C-75 and Bill C-5, which gave high priority to releasing repeat violent offenders and took away mandatory jail time for certain violent crimes. This has only been made worse by Trudeau losing control of the Canada-US border, with the Toronto Police Association reporting that 85 percent of all handguns seized by Toronto Police were illegally imported from the United States.
This has led to devastating consequences over the last week with two horrifying murders being committed by individuals with long criminal records. Harshandeep Singh of Edmonton and Alisha Brooks of Toronto were both failed by this government’s catch-and-release, soft-on-crime policies.
Justin Trudeau is not worth the crime. Only Common Sense Conservatives will bring home safe streets by securing our border and giving jail, not bail, to violent repeat offenders.
