FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ottawa, ON – After nine years, the NDP-Liberal government has failed to fix the housing hell they created. This was made clear today by the Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO), who reported that 2.6 million households will be in desperate need of better housing by 2027. This is an increase of 926,000 since Justin Trudeau launched his so-called “national housing strategy” in 2017.
Justin Trudeau promised to fix the core housing need of 530,000 households by 2027. But instead, things are only getting worse. Currently, the PBO reported that 2.4 million Canadians have a core housing need, defined as a household whose home needs major repairs, is unsuitable or unaffordable. Another 200,000 households will be added to this list over the next two years.
These results are disastrous for Canadians, even though Trudeau plans to spend an average of $6.1 billion annually on programs to address housing affordability. In fact, this is a 133 percent increase in nominal spending on housing programs, but Canadians are not seeing any results.
After nine years of Trudeau, housing costs have doubled, with housing inflation rising faster than any other G7 country. Before this NDP-Liberal Government, it took only 39 percent of the median pre-tax household income to cover home ownership costs. Now, it takes nearly 60 percent. Despite this, Trudeau continues to award bonuses to officials at his housing agency that are “more than the average salary of Canadians.”
Canadians need solutions. Yet on Tuesday, Justin Trudeau’s Liberals, along with the Bloc, voted against a Common Sense Conservative motion that would’ve saved Canadians up to $50,000 on the price of a new home, sparking the construction of 30,000 more houses every year. They also refuse to fire the gatekeepers who drive up the cost of housing with taxes and red tape, preferring instead to give billions to local governments in exchange for pointless photo-ops.
Trudeau doesn’t understand that Canadians can’t live in photo ops. Only Common Sense Conservatives will bring homes Canadians can afford by axing the tax on new homes under $1 million and tying federal infrastructure dollars to housing completions.
