January 16, 2025 OTTAWA, ON — After nine years of the NDP-Liberals, housing has never been more unaffordable, as they continue failing to get the homes that Canadians need built. This was confirmed once again by the NDP-Liberals’ own Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), which reported that housing starts fell 13 percent from November to December of last year. In our once-affordable cities, the collapse is even starker when compared to last year. Guelph saw housing starts crater 88 percent, while Montreal saw a 40 percent dive in December 2024 compared to 2023. Halifax and Toronto both saw declines of 32 percent, while Vancouver’s starts were down 29 percent. The same is true in Ottawa, Hamilton and Victoria, where housing starts dropped 25 percent, 24 percent and 20 percent, respectively. Across Canada, construction was down as Saskatchewan’s housing starts plummeted 41 percent, Nova Scotia experienced a 25 percent decline, and starts dropped 22 percent in Manitoba. Despite promises to double the number of homes built, housing starts fell in our major cities from 2023 to 2024, with Toronto experiencing a 20 percent decline and Ottawa and Vancouver each starting to build 15 percent fewer homes year-to-date. It’s not just our cities, as both Ontario and BC saw declines of 16 percent and 9 percent, respectively. Despite the billions spent on the NDP-Liberals’ failed photo-op fund, we are even further away from the 5.8 million new homes the CMHC has said Canada needs by 2030 to restore affordability. Only Common Sense Conservatives will fire the gatekeepers who block construction and axe the sales tax on new homes under $1 million, sparking 30,000 new homes every year.
